How to bulk categorize your products with a tax category in Shopify

1. Filter for Uncategorized Products

1. Go to your Products page in Shopify.
2. Add a filter by Category.
3. Select Uncategorized to find products that need categories assigned.

Note: This filter has already been created for you for convenience.

2. Export the Products

1. Click Export.
2. Choose Products matching your search.
3. Select CSV for Excel, Numbers, or other spreadsheet programs.
4. Download the CSV file.

3. Open and Edit the CSV

1. Open the file in Google Sheets, Excel, or a similar spreadsheet program.
2. Locate the product category column.
3. For each product, enter the correct category using one of the following formats:
   • The full Shopify taxonomy path
     Example: Apparel > Clothing > Wedding & Bridal > Bridal Party Dresses
   • The taxonomy code, if you have the Shopify taxonomy codes list

How to find the correct category

1. Open a product in Shopify.
2. Navigate through categories until you find the correct path
   Example: Apparel > Clothing > Wedding & Bridal > Bridal Party Dresses
3. Copy the full path and paste it into the category column in your CSV.

4. Save the Edited CSV

Once all categories have been added, save your CSV file.

5. Import the Updated CSV Back into Shopify

1. Return to the Products page in Shopify.
2. Click Import.
3. Upload your updated CSV file.

In the import dialog:

• Check Overwrite products with matching handles
• Uncheck Publish new products to all sales channels

Important: Only edit the category field in the CSV. Changing other fields may unintentionally update other product data.

6. Review the Import

• Shopify will show a preview screen before finalizing the import.
• The preview may not always display the correct category, but the import typically applies categories correctly.
• Finish the import.

7. Confirm Categories Were Applied

1. Open a few products to verify the correct categories were applied.
2. Use category filters to confirm everything is working as expected.
